15 Valentine's Day Date Ideas for Parents of Toddlers

Hello fellow parents!

As a mom of a spirited toddler myself, I know how challenging it can be to carve out some special time for you and your partner. But with Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's the perfect excuse to reignite that spark. Here are 15 creative and fun date ideas that are perfect for parents of toddlers:

  1. Play a Partner's Talking Game

    • Turn off the TV and put away the phones. Take out some partner-focused question cards and learn new things about each other.

  2. Go for a Romantic Walk Somewhere with a Nice View

    • Find a nearby park, trail, or scenic spot where you can enjoy each other's company and the beauty of nature. Don't forget to bundle up and pack a thermos if it's chilly! If you need to, take a stroller with your toddler.

  3. Have a Candlelit Dinner at Home

    • After putting the little one to bed, transform your dining table with some elegant candles, soft music, and your favorite takeout or home-cooked meal.

  4. Cook Dinner Together, Splitting Tasks

    • Pick a new recipe, divide the cooking tasks, and enjoy some quality time in the kitchen.

  5. Look at Photos and Artifacts from Your Wedding, Honeymoon, or Early Relationship Years

    • Reminisce over old photos and mementos. Share stories and laughter as you walk down memory lane together.

  6. Create a Photo Album or Scrapbook Together

    • Gather your favorite photos and craft a beautiful album or scrapbook. It's a lovely way to relive your memories and create something tangible to treasure.

  7. Write Love Letters to Each Other

    • Pour your heart out and write about what you love and appreciate about each other, your favorite memories, and dreams for the future. Exchange letters and read them together.

  8. Explore a Museum or an Art Gallery

    • If possible, plan a visit to a nearby museum or art gallery. If not, many institutions offer virtual tours that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.

  9. Themed Night: Italy/France/Prague...

    • Pick a country or city you both love and create a themed night. Cook traditional dishes, play local music, and maybe even dress up in outfits inspired by the culture.

  10. Indoor Scavenger Hunt

    • Create a fun and playful scavenger hunt inside your home. Leave clues and surprises for each other to find, leading to a sweet reward at the end.

  11. DIY Art Night

    • Set up a mini art studio at home with some canvases, paints, and brushes. Paint portraits of each other, create abstract art, or work on a meaningful piece together.

  12. Karaoke Night

    • Grab a microphone (or a hairbrush) and sing your hearts out.

  13. Virtual Travel Adventure

    • Pick a destination, watch documentaries, listen to local music, and cook a traditional dish from that country. It's a fun way to explore a new place without leaving home.

  14. Dance to Your Favorite Songs

    • Create a playlist of your favorite songs and dance like nobody's watching. It's a great way to let loose and have fun together.

  15. Plan a Dream or Real Vacation

    • Sit down together and plan your dream vacation. Research destinations, activities, and accommodations. Even if you can't go right away, it's exciting to dream and plan together.

I hope these ideas help you create a memorable and magical Valentine's Day with your partner. Remember, it's not about how much time you have but how you make the most of the time you do have. Enjoy every moment!

Happy Valentine's Day! 🌹

DIY Fairy Doll

DIY Fairy Doll: A Magical Birthday Surprise

I have a friend with an 8-year-old daughter who absolutely adores fairies. Reflecting on my own childhood love for these magical creatures, I decided to help prepare for her birthday party by creating a unique, upcycled fairy doll.

Among other ideas, I experimented with making a tutu skirt from plastic bags, following this tutorial. Simultaneously, I pondered crafting a small ragdoll fairy as a fun party activity. I discovered a no-sew tutorial here, but the idea of cutting my old shirts into strips felt like too much effort.

That's when I had an epiphany: I had leftover plastic bag strips from the tutu skirt project. All that remained was to tie the strips following the ragdoll tutorial. Instead of using cotton balls for the doll's head, I jumbled together scraps of plastic bags.

I love that my fairy doll is entirely upcycled from plastic bags, requiring no additional materials. The doll's translucency adds a whimsical touch, perfect for a fairy. Another advantage is that this doll is suitable for both indoor and outdoor play. Unlike traditional homemade dolls, my plastic bag doll can be washed, dried, and even left outside for a scavenger hunt during a fairy garden party.

This craft was incredibly easy and enjoyable to make. I plan to create more smaller dolls to populate a fairy garden, decorate for the party, and creatively repurpose our transparent plastic bags.

Steps to Make Your Own Upcycled Fairy Doll:

Gather your materials:

  • Plastic bags (various colors)

  • Scissors

    Step 1: Making the Body

  • Cut the plastic bags into strips. Cut away the bottoms and handles to use them as filler later.

  • Arrange most of them in a sun rays pattern as shown on the picture:

Step 2: Creating the Head

  • Gather some plastic bag scraps and form them into a ball in the middle of your sun pattern.

    • Form the head.

Step 3: Assembling the Doll

  • Tie the strips around the head to form the body. I formed limbs by tying three strips to the head in the middle and then braiding them together on each side.

Step 4: Adding the Finishing Touches

  • Adjust the strips to create a balanced look for your doll.

Going forward, I would like to create clothing for the doll (tutorial for a dress from a circle here and from a sock here and add butterfly wings using this tutorial.

After creating the fairy, we made some photos of it outside.

We also tried to make a skirt for the fairy using a paper tissue flower. Isn't she lovely? Let me know in the comments what accessories for the fairy would be fun to make.

DIY Advent Calendar for Toddlers: A Fun, Sustainable Holiday Tradition

DIY Advent Calendar for Toddlers: A Fun, Sustainable Holiday Tradition

Looking for a fun and engaging advent calendar for your little one? This year, I created a DIY advent calendar that’s visual, tactile, frugal, reusable, and filled with meaningful activities rather than sweets. Perfect for toddlers, especially those who aren't yet ready for sugary treats!

Why Choose a DIY Advent Calendar?

In my childhood, my mom would buy us chocolate-filled advent calendars. But with a one-year-old at home, I wanted to find a healthier, tooth-friendly alternative. I stumbled upon a wonderful idea on a German blog that embraced the Montessori philosophy. They suggested thematic activities for each day of the week, offering themes like music, outings, baking, quiet time, reading, preparing the home, and creative play. Inspired by this, I decided to curate the calendar with:

- Music Day: Christmas jingles

- Home Prep: Ornaments for decorating

- Creative Play: Crayons

- St. Nicholas Day (Dec 6th): Tangerines

- Quiet Time: Wooden toys

These items were not only sustainable and fun but also simple to gather from what I already had at home.

How to Make Your Advent Calendar

We used a long string across our living room wall, securing socks and numbered golden paper with clothing pegs for each day leading up to Christmas. It was a delightful, easy setup that added a festive touch to our home.

Each morning, our routine includes:

1. Ringing a bell

2. Lighting a candle on our advent wreath

3. Playing Advent music

4. Reading a Christmas story

5. Letting our toddler pull out the daily trinket from the sock

Our little one loves the surprise each morning, often playing with the toy before putting it back to pull out again. Blowing out the advent candles is another fun part of our day.

Sustainable and Toddler-Friendly

Initially, we considered using envelopes as containers. However, knowing how toddlers can be, we opted for socks on the string, making our calendar durable and eco-friendly.

This DIY advent calendar has filled our home with joy and anticipation, providing daily moments of connection and celebration. It's a cherished tradition that I hope will grow with my child and become a treasured part of our holiday memories.

DIY upcycled toddler phone

**From Unwanted to Uniquely Fun: Transforming a Phone Cover**

Ever order a phone cover only to find it didn’t fit? I did. Rather than toss a perfectly good cover, I stashed it away for a few years. Fast forward to when my little one, Owlet, started showing an interest in smartphones. That’s when inspiration struck: Why not turn the unused cover into a pretend phone?
This DIY is as simple as it gets! All you need is an unwanted phone cover and some cardboard. I didn’t even paint the cardboard, but feel free to get creative. You can experiment with phone designs, draw on numbers, or even add a favorite picture or a mirror. It’s a fun, easy project that turns an overlooked item into a source of play and imagination.

Inspiration for 8 DIY Christmas Napkin Rings

This is a collection of ideas I found on the internet. I did not want anything with deers, Santa or ivy so instead you can find ideas connected with stars, snowlakes and bells. I hope my mother will enjoy seeing one of these at our Christmas table:)
Looks really festive!
Seems easy to do if I end up not having much time.
I would do this one for christmas with different colors.

Such a cute idea!

These might be more difficult to make. I see the second one could be done with a laser cutter at our local college. They look very elegant so they might be worth a little extra effort.
